So, you have your room booked with us at Donner Lake Village Resort and you are looking for things to do and places to see in the area. Truckee has a lot of great things to enjoy and keep you entertained. If you are a history buff and love exploring and immersing yourself in the history of the towns and cities you visit, be at peace knowing that Truckee has a lot of this. We suggest an adventure-filled day to Historic Downtown Truckee to explore some (or all!) of their historical locations and landmarks. Need some inspiration? Here are some of our suggestions.
- Donner Memorial State Park: This beautiful park located in the Sierra Nevada has history and year-round natural adventure to enjoy including camping, hiking, fishing, and skiing, among others. Stop by the Visitor Center to learn about the history of the area and the people who came to this part of the Sierra including local natives, the Donner Party, and builders of the transcontinental railroad. You can also buy a postcard, books, and other items on the human and natural history of the area. Then, stop by the Pioneer Monument dedicated to the pioneers who crossed the Sierra on their way to the west.
- Old Jail Museum: This historic jail museum is one of the few 19th-century jailhouses still standing in the west and one of the few original buildings still remaining in Truckee. The jail was built in 1875 and was continuously used until May 1964, and you can pay it a visit and learn more about the history of Truckee including its many enjailed characters from Memorial Day to Labor Day. You'll also find photographs and relics from various industries and sports. After soaking in all the history and fun facts you are welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy it at the Memorial Garden behind the jail.
