Can you guess the most common question we're asked at the Front Desk? Okay, there's driving directions but generally it has to do with food. Most people just want to know one thing: where can I get a great breakfast (insert lunch/dinner depending on the hour).
Food. It's a big part of our vacations – from fueling up for a day on the slopes to a filling our bellies before a long paddle across Donner Lake. Don't worry; we have you covered on our favorite spots. Here are our top three:
- Squeeze In – Yes, that long time famous Squeeze In, the one featured on ‘Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives' with its sunshine logo hanging above the doorway. This breakfast favorite is a tight squeeze on the weekend; packed to the gills with locals and tourists alike in its long, narrow café (it's only 10 feet wide!). With its no-nonsense friendly vibe – guests are encouraged to sign their name on the wall – everything about Squeeze In quietly screams ‘laid back local' and you'll always leave smiling. They're known for their deliciously large omelets and side sauces – and don't forget to order the nacho sauce and their mimosa for good measure.
- Coffeebar Truckee – Though relatively new to the area by a few years, Coffeebar has established itself as the primo espresso joint this side of Tahoe City (Tahoe House will forever remain king when it comes to their Swiss freshly brewed coffee by the cup – not to be judged by the looks of their website). Serving high quality locally roasted espresso from Reno, inspired by the Italian coffee bars, touted as the ‘Ferrari of Coffee' their lattes will tempt you time and time again. The house-made pastries, crepes, and breakfast sandwiches stack up really well: high quality, local ingredients with a sense of Tahoe ‘cool.'
- Marty's Café – Also fairly new on the block, but clearly a contender is Marty's with various breakfast options from their veggie omelet with fresh dressed greens to eggs benedict that's rich and filling, and portions that are often talked about as ‘insanely large.' Don't be dissuaded by the wait – it's worth it! That's just another sign the locals love it so much … from breakfast to lunch to dinner, you have tons of options at Marty's.
