Best Ice Cream Spots Around Tahoe

About 6 month(s) ago by Becky Moore

The snow has melted and temperatures have heated up. You’ve traded your snow skis for water skis, and ski boots for worn in flip flops. You’ve packed away your puffy jacket and pulled out your bathing suit for an afternoon on the Donner docks. Oh summer, we welcome you. And we welcome all the fun parts of summer that tag along with the hot weather. Like how to spend your glassy mornings on Donner Lake, or where to go for a sweet, melty ice cream cone after a day of fun exploring Tahoe’s hot summer spots. We have you covered! Here are top three (not-so-secret) local spots:

  1. Bud’s Ice Cream / Truckee, California

Located on Commercial Row in Historic Downtown Truckee, since 1948 Bud’s Ice Cream is the old-fashioned fountain soda spot with leather counter stools perfect for a gathering while you chat with friends, gazing at the chalkboard sign trying to decide if you should order the banana split or go for an old-school root beer float. While you wait for your creamy old-fashioned yet basic vanilla cone, drop a quarter in the candy vending machines and be a kid again. Bud's is so old-school they don't even have a website. But you can find them on Trip Advisor, or contact 530.587.3177.

Poppy’s Frozen Yogurt / Tahoe City, California

A fairly new spot for cool treats, Poppy’s is located in Tahoe City along North Lake Boulevard — a small walk up spot, where you can hang on the deck with a view of Lake Tahoe (across the street). Though known for their frozen yogurt and large ice cream scoops we hear they have fantastic acai bowls, blending perfectly and topped with granola for a post-hike refresher. Stick around for their unique flavors, like mimosa sorbet!

Char Pit / Kings Beach, California

World famous for their ‘char-broiler’ burgers since 1962, Char Pit in Kings Beach, just a few blocks from Lake Tahoe, has a hidden gem: soft serve. We’re talking bountiful vanilla and chocolate soft serve they swirl all summer long into beautiful large ice cream cones, or a favorite — milkshakes. It’s a small spot with lots of outdoor seating. If you’ve been swimming or kayaking along North Lake Tahoe and want a quick satisfying treat, you’ll find all the locals at Char Pit!
