27th Annual Cushing Cross at Squaw Valley

About 2 month(s) ago by Becky Moore

With almost 700 inches of snow this year, it has felt a bit like the endless winter. Literally buried by snow, it was almost comical (dare we say blasphemous) to say, “really? Another powder day?” Let’s not talk about the years when we begged the skies to open up and give us day after day, week after week, of beautiful powder mornings around Truckee-Tahoe — we took this winter in stride and enjoyed every bit of it! How about you?

For the 2016/17 ski season many reports are staying open through May, and at Squaw Valley you’ll be able to ski or ride right up until July 4th! Yep. Ski in the morning and watch the fireworks by boat on Lake Tahoe. This year you’ll get the chance to ski and swim Squaw on the same day.

Speaking of skiing and swimming, the 27th Annual Cushing Crossing returns on Saturday, May 6 from 1-5PM! The snow has melted a bit (don’t worry; there’s plenty still), the Truckee River is rising, the tank tops are coming out: spring skiing is in full swing! Cushing Crossing is a local favorite, where legends are made. In case you have never heard of it, spectators gather around Cushing Pond as participants ski down and attempt to cross Cushing unscathed. In costume of course. Awards happen at 3PM at KT Base Bar.

The event signifies the end of a great winter season and the kick off of a warmer season of epic Tahoe fun. The Cushing Crossing is something you just have to see for yourself — it was the first of its kind back in the day, and still a lot of fun decades later!
